Living in the Monferrato: choosing the right area

Living in the Monferrato is not only about the landscape. It is a practical choice involving services, travel and daily organisation — with real advantages, and some concrete aspects to weigh up before deciding.

Who it suits

Those who want more space for the same budget than in Genoa, Turin or Milan; those who can work remotely or do not commute every day; families looking for a quieter pace of life for their children; and those approaching retirement who value quality of life over career.

Daily life: shopping, schools and health

Casale Monferrato concentrates most of the area's services: schools at every level, the hospital, supermarkets and shops. People living in the hill towns usually reach Casale in 10 to 20 minutes by car for anything they cannot find in their own village. It is a different balance from city life, but it does not mean giving up essential services.

Main home or second home

Some families choose the Monferrato as their main residence, usually in Casale Monferrato or in the towns closest to services. Others choose it as a second home for weekends and holidays, preferring the hill villages and the landscape. They are two different plans, leading to different areas and property types.

Cars, travel and connections

Outside Casale Monferrato a car is generally needed for daily life: public transport between the small towns is limited. Casale has a railway station and direct access to the A26 motorway; the nearest international airports are Turin and Milan.

Remote work and internet

More and more people move to the Monferrato and work remotely. Before deciding, check the internet coverage at the specific property: in towns such as Casale the connection is generally reliable, while for more isolated houses it is best checked case by case.

Maintenance, gardens, cascine and historic homes

Village houses, cascine and properties with land generally need more upkeep than a city apartment: garden, roof, systems and, for historic buildings, possible energy-efficiency work. These are commitments to plan for, not obstacles, but they deserve an honest assessment before buying.
